Artist Statement
Working from my studio in Red Hill (VIC), my practice spans weaving, spinning, dyeing, ceramics, and printmaking, each often taking long periods of production and utilises a range of tools, time and space. I'm interested in making art as a form of knowledge passing, and textiles have become an increasingly important way for me to investigate that through their immense histories, skill forms and cross-cultural connections. If I’m not producing functional objects, I’m illustrating figures engaged in craft, and researching new methods, most recently; indigo.
My practice is greatly informed by my masters research into craft theory, where I understood that the heart of craft is in the transmission of knowledge and the love of process. Objects worn and used have long served as symbols; as gifts, rewards, mementos or heirlooms. And in an exhibition space, these objects not only represent significant historical narratives but also generations of craft transmission, artisans and technology. It is this lineage of knowledge, skill and making that I hope to extend through my own practice.

Artist Bio
Currently completing mentorship under artist and weaver Emma Shepherd, supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Mia is preparing for the programs solo exhibition in Mornington for September 2026, whilst assisting craft specialists such as botanical dye specialist, Heather Thomas, and completing her Masters in Art Curation at Melbourne University.
She made her debut with a solo exhibition at Alternating Current Artspace, in 2021 titled “The Disembodied”, a print series, followed by her undergraduate show “MADA NOW” in 2022 entitled “Finding the Art in Craft”, reviewed for Mass Memo. Since then, she continues to volunteer at workshops and to artists across Melbourne including the Baldessin Press and the Australian Tapestry Workshop, engaging in art production whilst pursuing a career in the care of art heritage.
New Products
This noren was made through shibori, a technique in tying up fabric under tension before being immersed in an indigo bath to dye the cloth blue. The effect it has hanging in a doorway is especially lovely through sunlight, accentuating the contrasting panels, one a geometric pattern created from folding into a triangle, and the other, created by sewing squares and circles through various tying techniques.

The fringes on these decorative wall pieces, show the affect of using an indigo dye vat and ikat ties on a silk warp. The deep blue and speckling whites are created when a blue or white weft intersects with the warp. Hanging on your wall, it will move gently with the airflow in your space and compliment any blues.

Each of these runners were made from hand spun wool with its natural colouring as well as dyed green to create a speckle effect. Their smaller sizes are perfect as a feature for smaller side or coffee tables.

This two piece matt is unique and one-off, created by halving the warp into two shades of green and weaving through my hand spun yarn. As a result, it’s stiffer feel is perfect as a placemat or a focal point as a table runner.
